Common Pests in Cleveland County NC and How to Identify Them

H&H Pest Control & Waterproofing — Serving NC Since 1974

If you own a home in Cleveland County, you share your property with dozens of pest species year-round. The question isn't whether pests will find your home — it's whether you recognize them before they cause serious damage. Cleveland County's geography — a mix of Piedmont forests, Broad River bottomlands, agricultural land, and suburban neighborhoods — creates an ideal environment for a wide range of insects, rodents, and other pests.

At H&H Pest Control and Waterproofing, we've been protecting homes throughout Cleveland County and the surrounding region since 1974. Over those five decades, we've seen every pest species that calls western North Carolina home. This guide covers the most common ones and helps you identify what you're dealing with before it becomes a bigger problem.

Ants: The Most Common Complaint

Ants are the number-one pest call we receive across Shelby and surrounding communities. Three species are especially common in Cleveland County:

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are the largest ants you'll encounter in NC — typically black, 1/2 inch or longer. Despite their name, they don't eat wood; they excavate it to build galleries for nesting. Signs of carpenter ants include:

  • Frass (sawdust-like wood shavings) near baseboards or window sills
  • Large black ants foraging at night, especially in spring
  • Rustling sounds inside walls or woodwork

Carpenter ants prefer moist, softened wood, making homes with crawl space moisture problems particularly vulnerable. If you're seeing carpenter ants, it's worth having your crawl space inspected as well.

Fire Ants

Fire ants build those telltale mound nests in open soil — lawns, pastures, and roadway margins. Their sting is painful and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Fire ant colonies in Cleveland County are most active March through October, with mounds appearing quickly after rain.

If you have children or pets that play outdoors, fire ant control around your yard is a worthwhile preventive measure.

Odorous House Ants

These tiny dark ants (1/16 inch) emit a rotten coconut smell when crushed — hence the name. They're primarily a nuisance species that invades kitchens following moisture and food trails. While less destructive than carpenter ants, an odorous house ant infestation can be frustratingly persistent.

Our ant control service addresses all three species with targeted treatments that reach the queen, not just the workers.

Cockroaches: A Year-Round Threat

Cleveland County homes deal primarily with two cockroach species:

German cockroaches are small (1/2 inch), light brown with two dark stripes on the thorax. They thrive in kitchens and bathrooms, reproducing rapidly. A single pair can produce thousands of offspring in a year. German roaches are the most difficult to control due to their fast reproduction cycle.

American cockroaches (also called Palmetto bugs) are much larger — up to 2 inches — and reddish-brown. They prefer damp basements, crawl spaces, and utility areas. While they don't reproduce as quickly as German roaches, an American cockroach presence often signals a moisture problem.

Both species contaminate food and food-prep surfaces and have been linked to asthma and allergy triggers. If you're seeing roaches during daylight hours, you already have a significant infestation — roaches are nocturnal and typically only appear in the open when their population overwhelms available hiding spaces.

Rodents: Mice and Rats in Cleveland County Homes

Rodents are a particular concern in Cleveland County's rural and semi-rural properties, where agricultural land provides an abundant food supply. Mice and rats enter homes seeking food, water, and shelter — especially in fall as temperatures drop.

House mice can squeeze through a gap as small as a dime. Signs include:

  • Small dark droppings (1/4 inch) along walls and in cabinets
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, wiring, and structural materials
  • Nesting material (shredded paper, insulation) in hidden areas
  • Grease marks along walls where mice travel

Norway rats are larger and prefer lower areas — basements, crawl spaces, and ground-level storage. Their droppings are capsule-shaped and 3/4 inch long. Rats are capable of serious structural damage: they chew through electrical wiring (a fire hazard), PVC plumbing, and insulation.

Our rodent removal and control program combines exclusion (sealing entry points), trapping, and monitoring to address current infestations and prevent re-entry.

Mosquitoes and Ticks: The Outdoor Threat

Cleveland County's Broad River watershed, farm ponds, and wooded areas create ideal breeding habitat for both mosquitoes and ticks. These aren't just nuisance pests — they're disease vectors.

Mosquitoes in our area can carry West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Breeding season runs April through October. Standing water in as little as a bottle cap can sustain a mosquito larval population. Common breeding sites include clogged gutters, ornamental ponds, low spots in the yard, and discarded containers.

Ticks — particularly the black-legged tick (deer tick) and the lone star tick — are increasingly prevalent throughout Cleveland County as deer populations remain high. Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Ticks are active whenever temperatures are above 35°F, meaning they're a concern even in mild NC winters.

Our mosquito control programs dramatically reduce mosquito populations through barrier sprays that last 21 days, while tick treatments target the wooded borders and tall grass where ticks wait for hosts.

Termites: The Silent Destroyers

Subterranean termites are common throughout Cleveland County, and the Broad River watershed's moist clay soils provide ideal conditions for colonies. Because termites work inside walls and below the soil line, homeowners often don't notice them until significant structural damage has occurred.

We cover termite identification and warning signs in detail in our post on signs of a termite infestation. In brief: look for mud tubes along foundation walls, hollow-sounding wood, bubbling paint that resembles water damage, and swarms of winged insects in spring.

Annual termite inspections are the single most effective way to catch infestations early, before repair costs escalate.

Spiders, Wasps, and Other Common Pests

A few other species worth knowing in Cleveland County:

Brown recluse spiders — pale brown, 1/4 to 3/4 inch, with a distinctive violin-shaped marking on the top of the cephalothorax. Their bite can cause serious tissue damage. They prefer dry, undisturbed areas: attics, basement boxes, and closets.

Black widows — shiny black with a red hourglass on the underside. More common than most homeowners realize, especially in crawl spaces, wood piles, and outbuildings.

Yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets — build papery nests under eaves, in wall voids, and in the ground. Summer colonies reach several thousand individuals and become aggressive when disturbed. Fall is the most dangerous time, as colonies are largest and food sources are declining.

When to Call a Professional

Many homeowners attempt DIY pest control with store-bought products, but retail treatments are formulated for the general market — not for the specific pest pressures, soil conditions, and environmental factors of western NC. More importantly, DIY treatments address visible symptoms without reaching the source: the colony, the queen, or the entry points.

H&H offers free, no-obligation inspections for all residential properties throughout Cleveland County. Our 50-plus years of local experience means our technicians know where pests hide, how they're entering your home, and what treatment approach will work for your specific situation.
