Site Assessment & Design
We assess the topography, soil type, and water source (surface runoff vs. groundwater) to design the appropriate drainage solution. The discharge point must be identified — where the captured water will outlet (daylight, dry well, or storm drain).
Excavation
We excavate a trench following the drainage route, typically 12–24 inches wide and sloped at minimum ⅛ inch per foot toward the outlet. We call 811 (North Carolina's utility location service) before any excavation.
Drain Installation
We line the trench with filter fabric to prevent soil migration, place a perforated drain pipe on a gravel bed, cover with additional gravel, and wrap the fabric around the assembly. The pipe is connected to a solid outlet pipe that carries water to the discharge point.
Restoration
We restore the disturbed surface — lawn, mulch, or hardscape — and confirm proper drainage function. We document the system layout for future reference.
Why Professional French Drain Installation Matters
A French drain installed without proper assessment of soil permeability, slope, and discharge capacity will fail — sometimes causing worse problems than the original issue. Undersized systems, inadequate slope, and improper fabric installation lead to clogging within a few years. Professional design ensures the system handles your specific water volume and soil conditions.
Western NC's clay soils present specific challenges for drainage system design. Clay is nearly impermeable — water moves along the top of the clay layer rather than through it. H&H's experienced team understands how to design drainage systems that work with NC clay soil conditions rather than against them.
French drain installation requires excavation — which means calling 811 for utility locates before breaking ground. H&H handles utility clearance, all permits where required, and proper backfill compaction. Our crews have been solving western NC drainage problems for decades.
